II.1.4) Trumpas aprašymas:
A description of the functionalities of each of the components is written down below.
1. VMM3a hybrids equipped with two (2) chips, one (1) FPGA Spartan-7, and power converters and connectors: 224 pcs.
Each detector mainly called GEM-TPC in Twin configuration use 16 hybrids to collect the signals and assign time stamps to each of the signals. One hybrid board has 128 ch, with one VMM3a ASIC having 64 channels therefore two ASICs are placed in one hybrid board. The FPGA Spartan-7 is needed to handle the data flow and communication from ASICs and create the data payload that to be sent to the Front-end Card, which in this case is the MaxiROC.
2. MaxiRoc equipped with the FPGA and the firmware for the test of the system: 15 pcs.
Is the Fron-End card, which receives all the data delivered by the FPGA-7 via the HDMI cables. This data arrives to another FPGA, which is located on the MaxiROC which received all the data payload from all the hybrids and then creates the packages for transmission via ethernet links to the data concentrator or the disk for persistence of the data. One MaxiROC serves 16 hybrids hence one MaxiROC is used per detector.
3. PBX cards fully equipped: 30 pcs.
These boards are used to provide the Low voltage to the hybrids. One Power Box (PBX) has 8 channels thus provides the low voltages to 8 hybrid boards therefore two PBX modules are needed for each detector.
Therefore, it is mandatory to have all these modules in order to powering the system, then to collect the signals and digitize for the next step which is the data transmission to a persistence device, which in this case is provided by a computer node.
In conclusion none of the modules of this setup are off-the shelf and are not manufacturer by any other company. These modules have been developed under the umbrella by the now defunct CERN Research and Development 50 (RD50) and now continue under the Detector Research and Development 1 (DRD1) which it is in transition at the moment.
