The project "Strengthening the efficiency of drinking water and sanitation services in Burkina Faso" is a technical cooperation project implemented by Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). It is part of the German Cooperation program "Drinking Water and Sanitation Supply in Burkina Faso", which also includes financial cooperation measures implemented by the German development bank KfW.
Since 2024, the project includes a multi-donor-action "Improving sustainable and resilient drinking water, hygiene and sanitation services in the Hauts-Bassins region" (PASEDUR-WASH) jointly financed by the European Union and the BMZ. The overall goal of the action is to improve access of vulnerable population groups in the Hauts-Bassins region to sustainable drinking water, hygiene and sanitation services considering the protection of water resources.
The rapidly growing urban and rural agglomeration centers of the Hauts-Bassins region face serious challenges in providing secure drinking water and sanitation. Demographic growth is accelerated by a high influx of internally displaced persons fleeing from more insecure areas of the country, who typically settle in informal or underdeveloped periphery of the agglomerations. Infrastructure development does not keep pace with the increasing demand of drinking water and sanitation. This situation is exacerbated by an observed reduction of renewable water resources, which is partly attributed to climate change and partly to the development of land use and related changes in the land cover, which in turn influences the hydrological cycle.
Seeking to address these challenges, the action is composed of two outputs with the following specific objectives:
- Output 1: The integrated management of water resources in the Kou catchment area around the town of Bobo-Dioulasso is strengthened.
- Output 5: Access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation targeting the needs of women is improved in the Hauts-Bassins region.
Additional Outputs of the project "Strengthening the efficiency of drinking water and sanitation services in Burkina Faso", which are fully financed by the BMZ and are not part of the co-financed action, are
- Output 2: The technical basis for the broad-based expansion of decentralized sanitation has been improved.
- Output 3: Municipal ownership of drinking water and sanitation projects in the supported municipalities has been strengthened.
- Output 4: ONEA's ability to provide climate-resilient and customer-oriented drinking water and sanitation supplies has improved.
