PROJECT OVERVIEW AND BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
Museum Nord shall engage a designer/design company to design and construct a new exhibition for the Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg, Lofoten.
Museum Nord is a non-profit, government-backed organisation in the Norwegian national museum network, which operates 21 different museums in northern Nordland. Despite its location north of the Arctic Circle, Museum North is one of Norway's most visited museums. Our 21 facilities include major facilities such as the Lofotr Viking Museum and the Hurtigrute museum, as well as many smaller sites, such as village museums and cultural heritage centres of local importance.

BACKGROUND
The Lofotr Viking Museum in Vestvågøy is built on site for an extraordinary archaeological discovery - the longest viking longest ever found, a powerhouse and home for generations of chiefs. The site was discovered in 1981, and in 1994 a full-scale reconstruction of the long house was built next to the original, and the museum opened its doors to the public.
Lofotr is a major tourist attraction that attracts around 140,000 visitors a year, most international tourists, but also Norwegian tourists. In addition to the long house itself, Lofotr offers a wide range of experiences, including a new built port area, blacksmith, boats, horses and a broad programme of events and activities.
Our visitor centre contains an introduction exhibition and a film, last updated in 2011, and which is now being renewed. The reconstructed long house includes two rooms - the living room and the banquet hall - presented by costume-clad interpreters. The third room in the long house, the barn (the byre), is currently used as a multi-purpose room.
The museum has recently entered into a partnership with the team that produces the animated film ViQueens, which will be launched in 2026. The film is inspired by the objects and the history of Lofotr, and the museum wants to incorporate the film's tale, characters and digital resources into its new interpretation in order to attract new and younger visitors.
Museum North recognises that the current exhibition does not give visitors a sufficiently clear, engaging and emotional introduction to history before they enter the long house. We know that visitors often do not understand the key ideas and that there is a lack of variation in interpretation methods. We wish to challenge common myths about the Viking Age, reflect cultural and social diversity in the Viking Age, and connect the archaeological history presented in the exhibition and the immersive experience in the long house.
Summarised, our overall goal is to create new educational content and new programmes on Lofotr to improve the understanding of the Viking Age in Borg and Lofoten, and enhance the visitor experience for both the local community and tourists. We will also use the collaboration with the ViQueens movie to deliver new exhibitions and programmes.
